BOTHELL PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER
The City of Bothell, population 30,000, is located 12 miles north of Seattle. The City's project for a new Public Safety Center, which hosts a police department, municipal court and 911 call center, involved removing all the overhead distribution systems and cobrahead lighting and replacing it with underground utilities, including new roadway and pedestrian lighting. Along with meeting the lighting requirements for the new facility, the new pole and luminaire combination was also to be used as a new lighting standard for the city and community at large.
The center was designed with 1900s-era architectural details to blend with the community's overall theme, so the City Council selected Granville luminaires mounted on 15-foot dark green Washington fluted and tapered fiberglass poles. But in addition to complementing the architectural elements of the building by day, the facility lighting also had to give off enough light to make the area safe at night.
"Since we were converting from an overhead distribution system with cobraheads mounted at 30 feet, there were questions about whether there would be adequate lighting levels at a lower mounting height," recalls Mark Ericks, Chief of Police. INTOLIGHT performed a computerized lighting analysis to determine the luminaire placement and pole spacing in order to deliver the required lighting levels and uniformity desired by the City.
INTOLIGHT's lighting technicians installed the poles and fixtures according to the City's construction schedule and continue to maintain them as part of an ongoing lease agreement. Leasing saves the City money and also removes the burden of finding qualified people to perform the routine maintenance. INTOLIGHT's crews clean and inspect the lighting system on a regular schedule and replace lamps and photocells before they wear out. Says Ericks, "If a problem occurs, all we have to do is call INTOLIGHT and they will handle it."
