THE CITY OF DES MOINES

The City of Des Moines, known as "the Waterland City", is located between Seattle and Tacoma with a residential population of 29,000. The City has six miles of shoreline including public beaches, natural areas, waterfront parks, and a 900-slip marina. The City's marina is right next door to a "small-town" shopping district.

In the mid-1990s the City began a revitalization process for Pacific Avenue that included the removal of overhead distribution systems and attached cobrahead lighting to be replaced with underground utilities, including roadway and pedestrian lighting.

The vision for the area was a maritime theme within an urban setting. The city looked at various elements of the project and then selected luminaries and pole types to meet design criteria for safety and security reasons.

The roadway lighting south of South 192nd installed within the median used twin Bellweather 310 watt high pressure sodium luminaries on 40-foot tapered steel poles with Des Moines style arms. Additional roadway lighting was installed in the sidewalks, which also included 70 watt high-pressure sodium pedestrian lighting mounted at 16 feet.

A few extensions were added above the decorative arm for installation of a Des Moines Signature "Sail Boat" element within the pedestrian areas. The color of the luminaries and poles were specifically matched to the City's signature color theme.
